The AGED PROGRAM
The Aged (or Senior Citizens as Americans call the elderly population), do not have handicapped accessability in the community of Akropong or in most places in Ghana. The Aged Program offers transportation to the town elderly for health check-ups, blood pressure and diabetes screenings, optometry servcies, general fellowship with neighbors and friends, a meal, worship services and health seminars by health professionals from local hospitals.
The Aged Program takes place in Akropong's largest church but is not limited to congregation members, the program is open to ALL community members. Most elderly who attend are not mobile and are carried from their homes into a van and transported to the program. At the conclusion of the days events and activties, each member is escorted home by community volunteers. Akropong prides themselves in the longivity of their citizens, many reaching the ages of 90+ years old.
The Aged Program serves 300-400 elderly once a month and is exclusively funded by COF Ghana through fund-raising efforts. Currently COF Ghana is searching for 5 organizations to pledge a yearly budget committment of $500 to fund this program. The total budget for the program for one year is $2500 US dollars. The program is overseen by the elders of the Christ Presbyterian Church, COF Ghana founders and the COF Ghana board members. Currently, the Aged Program has two organizations committed to the continual support of this worthy program.

SPANCO Orphanages
A remarkable and inspiring woman named Gisela Becker founded SPANCO to help the neediest orphans in Ghana, West Africa 12 years ago.
Gisela has built hospitals, community centers, orphanages, provided food, access to clean water, schooling and much needed dignity to the children of a poor region of Kumasi.
Currently, Gisela has built a two story orphanage to house 150+ orphans and is in the process of having a school built to serve the whole community surrounding the orphanage. Gisela works with village leaders to serve the whole community and educate those in need.
Gisela is looking for donations to educate the children:
- $20 would educate one orphan for ONE school year!
- $100 would educate one student for a TWO year vocational training career
Please visit SPANCO's website for an awesome and inspiring video of Gisela and what she is doing for the orphans in Ghana, West Africa!
